Capabilities and limits
Hyle supports typed cell state, reusable initial values, named behaviors, explicit execution phases, neighborhood reads, topology changes and derived visual colors. Studio lets you compile, build worlds, paint, inspect, run and replay simulations.
| Capability | Current behavior |
|---|---|
| Guest editing | Public simulations and blank projects open without login |
| Initial worlds | .hyleworld recipes and reusable .hyleobject geometry |
| Simulation execution | CPU-64 and CPU-32; experimental GPU-32 and native GPU-64 on supported devices |
| CPU execution | Auto, Scalar and SIMD strategies within the selected precision |
| Visualization | GPU-rendered cells, free camera controls, slices and lattice guides |
| Reuse | Exact published models, properties, presets, behaviors and visuals, pinned in source |
| Timeline | Automatic state history, live scrubbing, undo/redo and forks from a displayed frame |
| Local files | Editable .hyleproject packages and read-only .hylebake playback |
| Editor | Vocabulary highlighting for Hyle, world recipes and object files |
Choose a solver based on device support and the precision your experiment needs. GPU execution is experimental and does not support every program. Cloud step computation, Blender/USD/OpenVDB exports and rendered-video bake exports are not implemented. Highlighting recognizes syntax; it is not semantic completion or live type checking. Compile checks the program.
A fast renderer does not imply fast physics: large cellular fluid scenes can take a long time per tick. Studio draws a finite region around the camera; move through large worlds or use slices to inspect their interiors. The local timeline has a 512 MiB budget. Download its bake before closing or starting a new history session.
